Romana Ramos
Chairperson, Board of Directors
Capeverdean American Community Development
(CACD), is a community organization based in downtown
Pawtucket, RI. CACD provides classes in ESL, computer
skills, citizenship, and literacy. CACD is host
to a number of events in the community: some recent
examples: Last month, a media roundtable on issues
facing the community, with NBC 10 reporter and
'Morning Sunrise' weekend anchor Mario Hilario,
Delia Goncalves, a reporter for CBS 12 and the
only Capeverdean tv reporter in Rhode Island,
and 3 representatives from area Capeverdean media.
Last weekend, more than 250 people flocked to
CACD for a fundraising 'Noite Caboverdeana', or
'Capeverdean Night', in which legendary singer
'Bana' received a lifetime achievement award and
performed for the crowd. In attendance at that
event were popular Pawtucket Mayor James E. Doyle;
area state representative J. Patrick O'Neill;
Cape Verde Minister of Culture Manuel Veiga; and
Minister Veiga's wife, Fatima, the Cape Verde
Ambassador to the UN.
Recently, CACD has participated in various
diverse community events: they marched in the
St. Patrick's Day parade, and will be competing
in the upcoming Taiwanese Dragon Boat Race and
festival later this year. On July 5, 2005, Cape
Verde marks its 30th year of independence from
Portugal, and CACD will be at the center of area
celebrations!
CACD headquarters is located in a large
building in downtown Pawtucket at 120 High St.,
close to the main public library, fire station,
and City Hall, adjacent to the Pawtucket Times
building.
You are most welcome to visit and find out
more about this exciting local organization! CACD
invites you to participate in one of our upcoming
events...
